FAQ

What is a hackathon?

A one-day event where you build a tech project in a team of 2 to 4, from an idea to a working demo. There are mentors, workshops, food, and prizes.

Do I need experience?

No. Beginners are welcome. Many attendees are at their first hackathon, and there are workshops and mentors to help you start.

How much does it cost?

Free for participants. Food and drinks are provided throughout.

Can I come alone?

Yes, most people do. Teams are 2 to 4 people, so you form one on our Discord before the event or on the day, and we help you find teammates.

Do I need a visa to attend?

If you live or study in the UK, no. Visitors from abroad should check gov.uk/check-uk-visa: many nationalities need an ETA (decided in days), others a Standard Visitor visa (about 3 weeks from biometrics). If you need a Standard Visitor visa, apply by 10 October so there is time for it to be granted. If you need an invitation letter to support your visa application, email unics@manchesterstudentsunion.com and we will send you one. We cannot cover travel costs or influence a visa decision.

Where and when is it?

Saturday 7 November 2026 at Nancy Rothwell Building, Booth Street East, Manchester M13 9SS. Open in Google Maps.
